Westerly woman charged after car accident in Charlestown

CHARLESTOWN — Two motorists have been transported to South County Hospital with injuries and one of them has been charged following an accident on Route 1 at around 5 p.m. this evening.

Charlestown Police charged Savanannah Cyr, 17, of 51 Beach St., Westerly, with failure to maintain control of her vehicle and laned-roadway violations.

Cyr will be required to appear before the Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal to answer these charges at a court date still to be scheduled, Lt. Patrick McMahon said.

Jared Dichiara, 29, of Attleboro, Mass., in a 2009 Subaru, was driving north on Route 1 when he was struck head on by Cyr, who was driving a 2002 Nissan, police said.

An initial investigation indicates that Cyr was traveling south on Route 1 when the vehicle in front of her turned right on Tamanaco Drive, McMahon said. To avoid the car, Cyr told police, she attempted to apply her breaks, veered left across all lanes of travel, over the median and into the northbound traffic.

McMahon said traffic on Route 1 northbound was shut down for about 30 minutes while rescue personnel attended to the injured motorists and a wrecker company removed the vehicles from the highway.
