  • Ellen Madison to speak

The public is invited to attend the Westerly Library Adult Book Club’s discussion of “Uncle Tom’s Cabin,” on Tuesday, July 8, at 1 p.m. when Ellen Madison will give a talk as part of the discussion.

The novel, with the memorable characters Uncle Tom, Topsy, Sambo, and Simon Legree and the best known novel of Harriet Beecher’s Stowe, was the subject of Madison’s doctoral dissertation. Considered revolutionary in 1852 for its the character Tom, the first black hero in American fiction.

Madison is the great granddaughter of Richard Opie, the owner of a small quarry and granite works and one of the authors of “Built From Stone,” an award winning book on the history of Westerly Granite. She retired from the classroom after 33 years as an English teacher in Ledyard. Madison is a trustee of the Babcock Smith House Museum and operates Woody Hill Bed and Breakfast. She has been one of the presenters at the Babcock Smith speaker series.

Programs at the library are free, open to the public, and handicapped accessible.
