In The Easy Chair with ... Edward A. Gencarelli Jr.

AGE Just turned 18.

POST GRADUATION PLANS To attend the University of Rhode Island.

BORN, RAISED & GREW UP IN Good, old Westerly!

FAVORITE WAY TO SPEND MY TIME With family and friends.

BEST HIGH SCHOOL MEMORY Tough to pinpoint just one. I would say being able to serve as a class officer, as well as winning the “Most Respected” superlative. I have thoroughly enjoyed my high school years!

WHAT I HOPE TO BE REMEMBERED FOR Being well-respected, and respectful to all people I encounter.

TOP ITEM ON MY BUCKET LIST Probably to visit Acri, Calabria, in Italy, where many of my family members came from.

ALWAYS IN MY POCKET Wallet, keys, at least two pens, and chewing gum. My phone is always on my belt in a holster-type contraption.

WHAT I WANT TO BE WHEN I GROW UP My goal is to first become a high school mathematics teacher, and a principal thereafter. Becoming the principal of Westerly High School is my ultimate goal!

PERSON OR EXPERIENCE THAT HAS INFLUENCED ME THE MOST My history teacher, Mr. Stephen Servidio. He stands as one of my primary inspirations for my career goals in the future, and his incredibly positive attitude about his career reaffirmed my interest in the education profession.

FAVORITE BOOK/AUTHOR “The Law of Attraction” by Esther and Jerry Hicks.

LAST BOOK READ I’m currently working on the third book in the “Law of Attraction” series, “Money and the Law of Attraction,” by the same authors.

FAVORITE SONG Probably “Walk of Life” by Dire Straits, although I am on a ’70s jaunt now thanks to the soundtrack at McQuade’s. “Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel” by Tavares is also a great song!

FAVORITE MOVIE “Titanic.” Outstanding film.

FAVORITE TV SHOWS “Family Guy,” “Seinfeld,” and “Blue Bloods,” all fantastic programs.

FAVORITE PET My 14-year-old cocker spaniel, Daisy.

FAVORITE FOOD My father’s pasta, with homemade red sauce, or my mother’s tortellini carbonara.

FAVORITE CELEBRITY/FAMOUS PERSON Brian Williams, my generation’s Tom Brokaw. He is a marvelous broadcaster.

AMOUNT OF TIME I SPEND A DAY ON FACEBOOK Little to none. I’m more of a Twitter man.

TRAIT I MOST ADMIRE A cautious mix between humility and pride. Honorable is the individual who can exude pride in his or her work without arrogance.

PET PEEVE Shouting. Particularly when it’s done for the sole purpose of getting others’ attention to make them laugh, or something like that. Drives me absolutely nuts!

FAVORITE QUOTATION “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson

MY FAVORITE THING ABOUT OUR LITTLE CORNER OF THE WORLD Aside from how centralized Westerly is, I absolutely love the Italian culture, and the different accents that accompany this area. Madonna mia!!

CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT My family, friends, and coffee. I love my coffee!

LITTLE-KNOWN FACT ABOUT ME I have a paralytic fear of needles, and elevators in high-rise buildings.

BEST ADVICE I’VE EVER RECEIVED My French teacher, Mr. Barry Leighton, pulled me aside after class one day to chat with me about the importance of receiving a good education. At that point, I was performing quite poorly in school, but Mr. Leighton’s comments lit a fire under me that has not since died out!

ADVICE I BEST LIKE TO GIVE Positive thoughts yield a positive life experience. Change your thoughts, and you change your world.

IF I RULED THE WORLD I WOULD Promote world peace, get rid of any oppressive leaders, fix the global economy somehow, and force everyone to get along.

IF I WON THE LOTTERY, THE FIRST THING I WOULD DO IS Pay off my family’s lingering expenses, build a nice house for my future family, and save or securely invest much of the rest.

I DRIVE A silver 2000 Chevrolet Impala LS. Her name is Pearl.

I WISH I DROVE A Mercedes-Benz SLS or SLR. Both ridiculously expensive but beautiful cars.

ALWAYS IN MY FRIDGE San Pellegrino Aranciata Rossa, a blood orange sparkling Italian drink. Fantastic stuff!

IF I COULD HAVE DINNER AND A CONVERSATION WITH ANYONE IN THE WORLD I WOULD CHOOSE My guitar teacher and friend, Christopher B. Hackett, who tragically passed away in July of 2009. I would love to be able to chat with him again, and catch up on what he has missed over the past four years.

Interview conducted and edited by Nancy Burns-Fusaro.
