Center’s annual picnic, raffle to end the season

With summer ending very soon, it is time to think of the senior center’s annual picnic for members on Saturday, Sept. 21 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Bob and Ann King have been planning a great afternoon of socializing, bingo, and eating hamburgers and hot dogs, salads, watermelon, sundaes and other goodies prepared by center chef George Routhier. Tickets are on sale at the center office for $5 or may be purchased at the door.

Carl Jerard and his corps of volunteers have been working hard all summer selling tickets for the summer raffle. Winners will be drawn at the end of the picnic. Hopefully we will remember to fasten the clasp on the barrel so we will not have a shower of tickets. Good luck to all those who purchased tickets for our second largest fundraiser. Kudos and many, many thanks to Carl Jerard who chaired the raffle and worked many hours selling, as well as soliciting volunteers. To Carl’s corps of volunteers and the businesses who hosted our sales, thank you, thank you, thank you. Your service is priceless.

With the arrival of September, the senior center has been a hubbub of activity and will become more so as activities return. Tomorrow, the center van will be headed to Crystal Mall at 9 a.m. This is a monthly service open to seniors older than 60 in the town of Westerly. On Friday, Sept. 27, the van will head to Warwick Mall. To make reservations, contact Edie Jacobson at the center Mealsite at 401-596-7216.

Westerly Hospital will be starting a new arthritis exercise class on Monday at 10:45 a.m. This is a six-week class that meets in the senior center shuffleboard room on Mondays and Thursdays. As this name indicates, this is a mild exercise group for seniors in which they do exercises that are good for the joints and muscles with or without the aid of a chair. To sign up for the class, contact the Westerly Hospital rehab department at (401) 596-3593. The cost is $30.

URI Pharmacy Outreach will be holding a free blood pressure clinic on Monday at 11 a.m. Nancy Tortaloni and her students will also consult on medications if you have questions.

The book discussion group will be meeting on Monday at 1:30 p.m. The book this month is one of my favorites, “The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency” by Alexander McCall Smith. New members are always welcome.

Floor shuffleboard will be resuming on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 1:15 p.m. The organizational meeting is scheduled for 1:15 p.m. this Tuesday. If you plan to play floor shuffleboard this year, please be sure to add your name to the sign-up sheet posted outside the center office by Monday. Tournament chairmen and teams will be chosen on Tuesday.

Barbara Mulholland from United Health/ AARP will be at the senior center on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. She will present options offered by United and AARP for Medicare supplements and Medicare Advantage programs.

Joe Mazza from INEC will be at the center on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. Joe offers social services to those whose primary language is Italian. Please be sure to contact him at 942-7770 if you plan to attend so he will know if he has enough people coming to make his trip from Providence worthwhile.

Announcements about special programs and the return of programs suspended during the summer will be given in this column and in the center newsletter during the year.

For reservations, call Edie at (401) 596-7216. Recommended donation is $3. Please make reservations on Thursdays for the next week.
