In The Easy Chair: David Panciera

AGE Lots.

OCCUPATION Retired library director (Westerly, Ashaway, Hope Valley), and a retired three-term state rep.

RESIDENCE Pleasant Street, Westerly.

RIGHT NOW I’M IN THE MIDDLE OF Organizing and cataloging 130 years of family photos, and starting plants.

BORN, RAISED & GREW UP IN Born, Mystic; raised, Stafford Springs; grew up, work in progress.

FAVORITE WAY TO SPEND MY TIME 1) in my garden; 2) on a stream; 3) at the stove; 4) with a book.

PROUDEST ACCOMPLISHMENT Tied for second, along with Ethan Wilcox and Kathryn Taylor, for having served most years as Westerly Library director (15 years.)

WHAT I’D LIKE TO BE REMEMBERED FOR Being a fellow who was there when you needed him.

ON MY BUCKET LIST Landing a 10-pound rainbow on a No. 20 dry fly.

ALWAYS IN MY POCKET Lint.

WHAT I WANTED TO BE WHEN I GREW UP In grammar school, a priest; in college, a farmer; in reality, a librarian.

PERSON OR EXPERIENCE THAT HAS INFLUENCED ME THE MOST My wife and best friend for 49 years, Elizabeth.

FAVORITE AUTHOR Robertson Davies (prose); Wallace Stevens (poetry).

LAST BOOK READ “Embers of War: The Fall of an Empire and the Making of America’s Vietnam,” by Fredrik Logevall, and “The Bully Pulpit,” by Doris Kearns Goodwin.

FAVORITE SONG Fauré’s “Requiem.”

FAVORITE MOVIE “Casablanca.”

FAVORITE TV SHOW “M*A*S*H.”

FAVORITE MEAL Polenta with rabbit.

AMOUNT OF TIME I SPEND ON FACEBOOK Two to three minutes a month.

TRAIT I MOST ADMIRE Empathy, intelligence and honesty — it’s a three-way tie.

PET PEEVE Selfishness, meanness and stupidity — it’s a three-way tie.

FAVORITE QUOTATION This, too, shall pass.

MY FAVORITE THING ABOUT OUR LITTLE CORNER OF THE WORLD The large number of extraordinary nonprofits that so enhance the quality of our lives e.g., the YMCA, the library, the Chorus, the Jonnycake, etc., etc., etc.

CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT Good cheese and good books.

LITTLE KNOWN FACT ABOUT ME I never learned to play a bassoon.

BEST ADVICE I EVER RECEIVED Was given by the abbot whose monastery I applied to right after high school: “Go to college first.” Five years later I had a degree, a wife and two children, and was monastically disqualified.

ADVICE I BEST LIKE TO GIVE One key to happiness within your control: Do what you love, be persistent, and much of the rest of your life will take care of itself.

IF I RULED THE WORLD I WOULD Be extremely nervous and probably sleep quite badly.

IF I WON THE LOTTERY, THE FIRST THING I WOULD DO IS Give the proceeds to the first dozen people who came to mind.

I DRIVE A 2005 blue Honda Civic hybrid.

I WISH I DROVE A 2005 blue Honda Civic hybrid with fewer miles.

ALWAYS IN MY FRIDGE Parmigiano Reggiano from Westerly Packing.

IF I COULD HAVE DINNER AND A CONVERSATION WITH ANYONE IN THE WORLD I WOULD CHOOSE The Dalai Lama.

— Interview conducted and edited by Nancy Burns-Fusaro.
