High school preview: Westerly boys’ cross country
Head coach: Ryan Palmer (6th year).
Assistant coach: Leeanne Liguori
Last year: Westerly was 4-6 in Southern Division competition and fifth in the Class B meet. Tim O’Loughlin earned first team All State honors with a second-place finish at the state meet and was 28th in the New England meet.
Coming back:
Seniors: Tim O’Loughlin, Mike Vettese, C.J. Sanchez, Eric O’Rourke.
Junior: Steve Sylvia.
Sophomores: John Ferraro, Cullen McAndrew.
New faces:
Senior: Andrew Springer.
Freshmen: Tom Gibson, Kyle Arruda.
Outlook: The addition of Springer is an obvious boost. Together with O’Loughlin, Westerly has the same distance duo that led the outdoor track team to a Class championship last spring. Vettese, All Class B last year, and last years’ underclassmen are a nice complement, but Westerly will only go as far as the big two take them. The Southern Division is a warm-up for the class and state meets and the Bulldogs will likely fall in the middle of the pack. O’Loughlin and Springer have the potential to carry their team to the states.
Coach’s take: “Tim (O’Loughlin) is primed for a great year. He trained hard this summer for the first time and dedicated himself to be ready for the cross-country season. Springer is obviously a great addition and I’m looking forward to how good he can be getting in a full year of running. All 10 of my athletes have a great work ethic and I expect them to run personal bests at the class meet to qualify us for the state meet. We’ll see where we go from there. Tim and Andrew could go 1-2 in the states and I don’t know who would be 1 and who would be 2. It would be great for Westerly High and for them.”
