Welcome to the Front Porch dear friends and gentle readers.  Victory Day greetings to one and all.  Ah, yes, Victory Day, another wonderful “unique to Rhode Island” thing.

There’s an abundance of good news in the “Happy Anniversary” department this week. First of all, happy anniversary wishes to the amazing and fantabulous Pat and Austin Murphy of Shelter Harbor who celebrated their golden — that’s 50! — anniversary recently. The regal couple renewed their marriage vows then celebrated with all of their children and all but three of their grandchildren in attendance. Quite the event I hear tell! Happy anniversary also to Deacon Stephen and Ellie Cote who celebrated 30 years together (you must ask Steve to show you his Watch Hill tie!) and to the coach of all coaches Chris Wriedt and his wife Candy who celebrated 25 years of togetherness. Lots of love and congratulations to all three amazing couples, and thank you for setting such fine examples!

And we have new baby news as well! Larry and Linda Desantos of Westerly are the very happy and very proud new grandparents of their first grandson, Thomas Henry DiSanto who was born last week in Vermont. Baby Thomas joins his big sister Charlotte who is evidently quite taken with her new role as big sister. Congratulations Nana and Papa! Closer to home Dana and Brian Horton of Westerly are over the moon with the arrival of their first daughter, Sophia Elizabeth, who arrived on July 29, making soon-to-be-two year- old Matthew a big brother. Congratulations!

Speaking of delightful announcements, how darling is this? Charlestown tennis coach Lindsay Gilligan, daughter of Lorie and Tom Gilligan of Charlestown, who has been teaching tennis to kids in Charlestown’s park & rec program for years, said “Yes” to her longtime beau and fellow tennis coach, Doug Bliven son of Dennis and Mary Bliven, also of Charlestown. I guess the lovebirds, who are planning an August ’09 wedding and are both employed by the Chariho Regional School district found true love on the tennis courts!

Front Porch News regulars know how much I enjoy “six degrees of separation” stories — or three degrees in our little neck of the woods — so how about this one? Last week when officials from CCRI came to the Westerly Middle School to formally kick off their new Westerly Satellite Campus, their PR pro, Kristen Cyr was on hand to make sure things went smoothly as was WPS PR pro, Georgie Koppermann. As soon as the two began chatting, they realized that they were both from Manchester, Conn., both attended Keeney Street Elementary School and Bennett Junior High where they both knew Westerly resident (and WPS volunteer in Joan Serra’s Even Start Family Literacy program) Dick Williams who was a sixth grade teacher for many years. Georgie, who is good buddies with Westerly Chief of Staff Sharon Ahern, added yet another plum piece to the Manchester story when she said that her brother Frank Livingston (I presume) was good friends growing up with former Ocean House chef and local carpenter Pat Callahan, who is married to the former Joyce Ahern, sister of Tommy, who is married to Sharon. How about that? Any other Manchester connections out there? Do let us know!

Mystery novel fans will want to make sure to stop by the Westerly Public Library Wednesday night to hear local author Jack Partridge talk about his latest whodunit, “Straight Pool.” Partridge, who spends summers in Shelter Harbor, and practices law in Providence, has written a fascinating second book with lots and lots of local touches, including a trip back in time to 1938 and the old Ocean House, a character named Ugo Calabrese and a “mendacious mayor” of Providence. Good read and good fun! I bet he’ll even sign your copy of your book!

A very special hello this week to Front Porch News fan Mary Clark, mother of the oh-so-terrific Evie Martin! And to the dear and beautiful Front Porch friend Rita Herbert, a terrfic lady and diehard Democrat who is doing a swell job with her recuperation. Any chance you’ll make the convention, Rita? If anyone could set them straight, it would be you!

So much more to share, like Front Porch pal Arthur Pignataro’s upcoming Granite role, Carolyn Longolucco’s latest success, and John Brodeur’s latest accomplishment, but I’ll have to keep you guessing ‘til next time!

Ok amigos, Adios, stay well, enjoy the week and ciao bella.
