KINGSTON – Westerly High’s Katie Mangano turned in one of the best performances of her high school career on Saturday and it made her a state champion.
Mangano earned the state title in the 100 freestyle Saturday at the University of Rhode Island during the state swim meet.
Mangano finished with a time of 54.31 seconds breaking her own school record of 55.02 that she established earlier this season.
“My 100 free, I was really happy with,” Mangano said. “It was pretty much neck-and-neck at the first turn. But I slowly kept breaking away.”
This is Mangano’s first state championship.
“It has always been a goal of mine,” Mangano said.
Coach Kerri Butler said Mangano keeps everyone on the team going.
“She is the heart and soul of the team,” Butler said. “She keeps everything high-spirited.”
Mangano finished second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:00.94. North Kingstown’s Liz Beisel, one of the top high school swimmers in the country, won the event with a 54.71. Beisel set two pool records on the day.
