Swimming: Sheldon wins three events at Eastern Zone championships

RICHMOND, Va. — Ashaway’s C.J. Sheldon won three of the six events he participated in at USA Swimming’s Eastern Zone Long Course Age Group Championship held Aug. 8-11 at the Collegiate School Aquatic Center.

Sheldon, who as a Bishop Hendricken freshman won the 100 and 200 freestyles at last winter’s Division I championships, competed in the 15-18 age group at the Eastern Zone meet (he turned 15 on July 10). His three wins came in the 50 free, in 24.45 seconds, the 100 free (53.44) and the 400 free (4:13.35).

He was also second in the 200 free (1:59.09), third in the 800 free (8:55.86) and fourth in the 1,500 free (17:03.21). All six times were personal bests.

Sheldon qualified to compete in four events at the 2019 YMCA National Championship in Greensboro, N.C., where he will represent the Ocean Community YMCA in Westerly. He also qualified for next summer’s USA Swimming Futures Championships and the USA sectionals.
