NECBL: Schooners edge Waves, 5-4

GROTON — Brett Rodriguez (Wofford) and Chris Sullivan (Hartford) hit back-to-back RBI doubles to put the Mystic Schooners ahead to stay in their 5-4 victory over the Ocean State Waves in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game on Friday at Fitch High School.

Mystic (21-20, third place Southern Division) trailed 4-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth. Sean Sullivan led off the inning with a single, and, one out later, Rodriguez doubled to tie the game. Sullivan then doubled home Rodriguez to make it 5-4.

Relievers Nick Rand (UMass Lowell) and Thomas Girard (Duke) blanked Plymouth the rest of the way. Rand allowed two hits in three shutout innings. Girard allowed a walk in a hitless ninth.

Starter Karl Johnson (UConn) went five innings to earn the win. Johnson (3-2) allowed four runs on eight hits.

Rodriguez finished 3 for 4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. He leads the team with a .295 batting average. Sullivan was 2 for 4 with one run scored and one RBI.

Freddy Sabido (Wagner) and Sean Sullivan (Dartmouth) each added two hits. Sabido had an RBI double.

Grant English (Winthrop) homered for Ocean State (23-17, second place Southern Division).

After the weekend’s NECBL All-Star game in Holyoke, Mass., Mystic visits Ocean State on Tuesday for a 6:30 p.m. game at Old Mountain Field in South Kingstown.
