NECBL: Mystic earns spot in postseason

NEWPORT — Chris Winkel (Connnecticut) hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning as the Mystic Schooners defeated the Newport Gulls, 7-4, Wednesday night to clinch a spot in the New England Collegiate Baseball League postseason.

Mystic (22-21) will travel to Ocean State on Friday in a one-game playoff to advance.

Winkel also doubled and finished 3 for 5.

The game was tied at 4-4 entering the ninth. Mystic took a 5-4 lead on a sacrifice fly by Anthony Cruz (Quinnipiac) and Winkel later followed with his homer, his eighth of the season.

Matthew O’Neill (Pennsylvania) also hit a solo homer for the Schooners. Brett Rodriguez (Wofford) and Chris Sullivan (Hartford) both finished 2 for 4 with an RBI. Sullivan also doubled.

Thomas Girard (Duke) pitched the final 1-2/3 innings striking out three to earn the win.

Mystic travels to Sanford, Maine on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. to close the regular season.
