Youth football: Westerly earns rare win against New London

WESTERLY — Zach Tuck scored a pair of touchdowns and the Westerly 14U youth football team earned a rare win against New London, 21-6, in a Southern New England Youth Football Conference game Saturday night.

Tuck scored on a 20-yard run in the first quarter and from 25 yards out in the fourth quarter.

John Sullivan scored the other Westerly TD on a 15-yard run in the second quarter at the Bulldogs took a 14-0 lead.

New London scored in the fourth quarter to make it 14-6, but Tuck answered with his second touchdown later in the period.

Lance Williams tossed a pair of conversion passes to Jimmy Powers and another to Ben Gorman.

New London has traditionally been one of the most successful programs in the league, at all levels, for many years.

“This team (New London) had scored 90 points in the last two games,” Vacca said. “Our defense held them to six. The kids came to play.”

Gorman had a sack and seven tackles on defense. Jaiden Discuillo contibuted a sack and nine tackles.

Vacca said Westerly’s offensive line of ends Jacob Nieves and Gorman, tackles Mitch McLeod and Noah Hudson, guards Shawn Obershaw and Conner Lowenstrom and cener Zach Morin “played outstanding.”

Westerly (2-1) travels to Norwich on Saturday. 

New London 48, Westerly 12U 0

WESTERLY — New London led 26-0 at the half and beat the Bulldogs Saturday night.

Brian Allen had seven tackles, two for a loss for Westerly. Mason Gingerella finished with three tackles, one for a loss. Terrell Hill also intercepted a pass.

Westerly travels to Norwich Saturday night at 6 p.m.

Chariho JV 33, North Kingstown 0

NORTH KINGSTOWN — Jordan Chaloux scored two touchdowns as the the Cowboys earned the shutout win.

Chaloux scored on runs of 15 and 10 yards. Amani Bomah had a 60-yard TD run. Will Steiger scored on a 3-yard run. Miles Price caught a 15-yard scoring pass from Matt Timpson.

Price also kicked an extra point and Cooper Wootherspoon contributed a conversion run.

Chariho hosts West Warwick on Sunday in Charlestown behind the Town Hall.

NORTH KINGSTOWN — Frederico Giramma scored Chariho’s only touchdown in the loss Sunday in an Rhode Island Preteen youth football game.

Giramma ran 70 yards for the score. He intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble. Chariho trailed 20-0 at the half.

Damin Cook and Garrett Lawton made several tackles each for the Chariho defens.e Ezarah Schonrog, Carter Hopkins and Cedar Shuler Jr. led the blocking for hte offense.

Chariho hosts West Warwick on Sunday at the field near the Charlestown Town Hall.
