Middle school: Female one of two state wrestling champions for Chariho

COVENTRY — Two Chariho Middle wrestlers earned state titles Sunday, including the first female champion in school history.

Alexandra Nelson finished first at 140 pounds with a 4-0 record. She won a 9-5 decision in the title bout. Nelson is only the third girl to win a state middle school title.

Gary Gardiner posted a 4-0 record to take the title at 180 pounds. Gardiner prevailed in the finals, 3-0. His other wins were by pin in the first minute.

Chariho finished eighth in the team standings with 103 points. Feinstein Middle won the title with 209.

Luke Mead placed fourth at 150 pounds and Collin Lee was fifth at 82 for Chariho Middle. Brady Anderson earned sixth at 94 and Alex Nimiroski was seventh at 205.

Westerly had one wrestler in the tournament. Andrew Bozek was 1-2 at 75 pounds.
