College basketball: LaFrance Boyce scores 1,000th career point for UConn-Avery Point

GROTON — Two local athletes played well for the UConn-Avery Point basketball teams on Saturday.

Tatyana LaFrance Boyce, a Stonington High graduate, had 21 points, including the 1,000th of her collegiate career, 15 rebounds, nine assists and seven steals to lead the UCAP women’s team over Bunker Hill Community College, 105-37.

The win was the seventh straight for the Pointers (16-5, 8-1 NJCAA Region 21).

LaFrance Boyce scored her 1,000th point as a Pointer on a free throw with seven minutes to go in the second quarter. She will be honored prior to the team’s game against Sullivan County CC on Tuesday at 7 p.m.  

On the men’s side, Jacee Hamelin, a Westerly High grad, scored 19 points and had five assists in the Pointers’ 70-65 loss to Bunker Hill.

With the loss, UCAP fell to 8-15, 8-11 Region 21.
