NECBL: Schooners rally to defeat Danbury, 6-3

DANBURY, Conn. — The Mystic Schooners scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning, highlighted by Steve Barmakian’s go-ahead single, and went on to a 6-3 victory over the Danbury Westerners in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game Thursday night at Rogers Park.

Pitcher Thomas Girard (3-0) earned the victory. Girard (Duke) entered in the eighth and didn’t allow a hit. He struck out three.

The Schooners (17-13) trailed 3-0 after seven innings. Freddy Sabido (Wagner) hit a two-run home run in the top of the eighth to make it 3-2.

In Mystic’s ninth, Chris Dutra (Duke) led off with a single. Pinch-hitter Chris Winkel (UConn) followed with an RBI double to tie the game and, one out later, scored on the single by Barmakian (George Washington).

Brett Rodriguez (Wofford) and Chris Sullivan (Hartford) then hit back-to-back RBI doubles to make it 6-3.

Barmakian finished with two hits and two runs scored.

Mystic starter Bret Clarke (Stony Brook) allowed three runs on eight hits in six innings. He struck out four and walked none.

Danbury fell to 13-18.

Mystic next hosts the Keen Swamp Bats (17-13) on Friday at 6:05 p.m. at Fitch High School.
