Local briefs: LaFrance Boyce leads UCAP to win in NJCAA Div. III Region 21 title game; top local finishers in Kelley’s Pace Hare Hop 5K

Stonington High graduate Tatyana LaFrance-Boyc had 30 points and six rebounds to lead the UConn-Avery Point women’s basketball team over Roxbury Community College, 74-69, in the NJCAA Division III Region 21 championship game Sunday at Bunker Hill CC in Boston.

LaFrance-Boyce was named to the all-tournament team and was the tournament MVP. For the season, she’s averaging 22.4 points per game, tops in Region 21.

The Pointers (22-6, ranked No. 4 in NJCAA D-III) will next play in the national tournament at Rock Valley College in Rockford, Ill.  UCAP has not been to nationals since the 2008-09 season. 

Road racing

Carson Riley of Mystic was the top local finisher at the Kelley’s Pace Hare Hop 5K on Saturday in Mystic.

Smith, 13, finished in 20:09, good for 10th overall. The winner was Niantic’s Brian Whitney, 29, in 17:52.

The top local female was Pawcatuck’s Melanie Diamanti, 44, who was the second female finisher and 20th finisher overall, in 22:46. The first female to cross the line was Michelle Navarro, 26, of Rocky Hill, Conn., in 21:10, 11th overall.

Other top local males were Tom Smith of Mystic (17th overall, 22:15); Chris O’Donnell of Mystic (18th, 22:25); Marc Ferace of Mystic (19th, 22:44); Jim Roy of Mystic (21st, 22:48); and Joe Callaghan of North Stonington (23rd, 22:59).

Other top local females were Lydia Kenny of Stonington (28th overall, 23:41); Anni Rodgers of Mystic (29th, 23:43); Susie Smith of Mystic (31st, 23:55); Rebekah Kepple (32nd, 23:59); and Sarah Parker (41st, 24:54).

There were 136 registered finishers of the race.
