PUTNAM, Conn. — It took a little while for the Wheeler High boys’ basketball team to overcome Putnam’s press but, when they finally did, it led to some big offense for the Lions and an 80-65 non-league win Wednesday.
The Lions fell into a 6-0 hole to start the game, but rallied and took an 11-10 lead by the end of the first quarter. Wheeler then outscored the Clippers 23-12 in the second quarter and never looked back.
“We came out slow, but we were able to get organized and were able to score whenever we wanted against their press,” Wheeler coach Neal Cobleigh said. “We had a lot of fast-break opportunities and we also rebounded better after the first quarter.”
