Boys soccer: Wheeler drops opener against Montville

MONTVILLE — Scott Pion and Ian Spracklin each scored goals, but the Wheeler High boys soccer lost to Montville, 4-2, in the season-opener for both teams Monday night.

The game was played in a steady rain that became heavy at times.

Goalie Bowen Baker had an assist and so did Ethan Foberg. Baker played a ball from the back that Spracklin headed in for a goal.

Wheeler trailed 2-1 at the half. Pion’s goal with about 20 minutes into the second half made it 3-2.

“Our kids played very well today,” Wheeler coach Joe Mendonca Sr. said.

Outside back Blake Stedman, midfielder Matthew Pierce and center back Lucas Jones all played well for the Lions.

Baker made six saves in goal. Montville outshot the Lions 10-7 in the ECC out-of-division game.

Wheeler travels to St. Bernard on Thursday at 3:45 p.m.
