KILLINGLY — Sophomore Scott Pion scored 20 points, and Wheeler High opened the boys basketball season with a nonleague win over Ellis Tech, 60-45, Saturday.
Pion made a pair of 3-pointers and grabbed seven rebounds.
“We moved the ball well today in both full-court transition and our half-court motion offense,” Wheeler coach Neal Cobleigh said. “We could have rebounded a little better. But it’s early.”
Ian Spracklin added nine points and nine rebounds, while Clayton Carini finished with eight boards. Bower Baker led the team in rebounds with 10, and Ryan Condon had six assists.
Wheeler led 33-23 at the half.
The Lions travel to Putnam on Monday for a 7 p.m. game.
