Postseason roundup: Wheeler’s Morgan repeats as Class S All-State pick, ECC Division III first-teamer

NORTH STONINGTON — What Wheeler High’s Emma Morgan accomplished this girls soccer season was pretty remarkable.

She scored 17 goals, tied with Laura Guigli for third on the school’s all-time list for goals in a season. She finished her career with 53, good for third in school history and just one from tying Abby Karpinski for second place.

But Morgan’s accomplishments take on even greater significance because the midfielder was Wheeler’s primary offensive weapon. Wheeler scored just 22 goals this season.

All of Morgan’s work earned her Division III ECC first-team All-Star honors for the third straight time. She was also a Class S All-State pick for the second straight year.

“A lot of the time she was double- and triple-covered,” first-year Wheeler coach Jim Cervini said. “She was the captain of the team and the overall leader. She’s in great shape and knows where the ball is going even before it gets there.”

Cervini said the senior’s exceptional foot skills helped her excel for the Lions. But that wasn’t all.

“She has a great view of the entire field,” he said.

Morgan also received the team’s ECC scholar-athlete award. This is the first time the league has given out such an honor to the top student on the team.

Junior Gracie Anderson was the team’s ECC sportsmanship recipient. Wheeler finished the season 1-14-1, 1-11.
