Boys basketball: Wheeler shut down by Putnam in loss

The Westerly Sun

PUTNAM — Putnam effectively used a 2-2-1 three-quarter-court press to stifle Wheeler High and post a 62-35 win in a nonleague boys basketball game Monday.

“They set it up, we didn’t flash to the middle and tried to dribble against it, they trapped, stole it and off they went,” Lions coach Neal Cobleigh said.

The Clippers (1-0) led 33-13 at halftime and 44-16 through three quarters.

Clayton Carini scored 12 points for the Lions (1-1). He was the Wheeler player in double figures.

The Lions finished with just nine rebounds.

“You do not win if you do not rebound,” Cobleigh said.

Wheeler next hosts Stonington on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
