Westerly’s Drew Widdifield turned in a solid showing at 138 pounds losing to Mt. Hope’s Christian Torres 8-4. Torres was the runner-up at 132 in the state tournament last season losing to Westerly’s Cody Brown in the title match.
“Drew wrestled very well tonight,” Westerly coach Al Gaccione said. “It was a great match.”
Widdifield is 29-13 this season.
Westerly concluded the dual meet season 4-17 overall and 3-12 in Division I-South.
Mt. Hope improved to 12-3 overall and in the league. The Huskies came into the bout in first place ahead of second-place North Providence (11-4).
The victory allowed the Huskies to secure the crown outright. A loss would have dropped them into a tie with North Providence. Mt. Hope beat North Providence in the dual meet season.
Westerly is off until Friday, Feb. 28 when it will compete in the state tournament. Friday’s session starts at 5 p.m. at the Providence Career & Technical Academy.
