Westerly, which hadn’t won a Division I match since beating Woonsocket on Jan. 20, improved to 3-15 overall and 2-10 in Division I-South.
Shortt improved to 31-3 overall this season. The junior has 20 wins by pin and has posted a 15-1 record in league meets. In the 15 dual meet wins, 11 have come by pin fall.
Westerly posted two other victories by pin fall in the loss to Johnston. Jaime Ramirez pinned in 2:52 at 145 pounds and Marco Bonanno ended the 132-pound match with a pin at 1:02.
Ian Rose downed Johnston’s Scott Fang 8-3 in the 120-pound match to account for the other Bulldog scoring against the Panthers.
Shortt’s pin was the only one Westerly had in the win over the Hurricanes.
Westerly’s other points came from a couple of decisions and three forfeit wins.
Dante Turano downed Warwick’s Nick Thompson 8-6 in the 106-pound match. Drew Widdifield (138) earned a 15-0 win over Warwick’s Davin Lourenco.
The Bulldogs are scheduled to have a match at home against Mt. Hope today at 7 p.m. The freshman and JV state meets are this weekend.
GIRLS’ INDOOR TRACK
Bulldogs 4th at JV states
PROVIDENCE — Charlotte Andrus and Sarah Garvey each finished third in individual events and Westerly placed a pair of relay teams in second place at Tuesday’s junior varsity state meet at the Providence Career & Technical Academy.
Andrus finished third in the 300 meters in 45.65 seconds and Garvey ran third in the 1,500 in 5:16.63.
Westerly finished in fourth place out of 23 teams. The Bulldogs totaled 28 points. North Kingstown won the team title with 64 points.
The Bulldogs placed second in both the 4x400 relay and the 4x800 relay.
In the 4x400 Westerly finished in 4:31.21 with Andrus and Garvey being joined by Julie Senior and Carlie Sisco.
Andrus, Garvey, Senior and Liz Orr teamed up to finish in 10:24.84 in the 4x800.
