Wrestling: Holdredge’s 5th-place finish leads Bulldogs at state championships



PROVIDENCE — Westerly High’s Brady Holdredge finished fifth at 160 pounds at the RIIL wrestling tournament Saturday.

Holdredge finished with a 3-2 record in the championships, held at the Providence Career & Technical Academy. He pinned Hope’s Ayomide Onajide in the match for fifth place at the 4:22 mark. He had beaten Onajide earlier in the tournament.

Holdredge lost in the semifinals to Chariho’s Ben Dougherty, 4-2. Dougherty took control of the bout with a takedown in the first period to lead 2-0.

An escape in the second period gave Dougherty a 4-0 lead. Holdredge did get a takedown late in the third period, but could not put Dougherty on his back.

Ethan Kadar finished 3-2 at 145 pounds, losing his final bout of the day, 5-4.

Judea Balmonte was 2-2 at 220 pounds, losing his final bout, 3-1.
