Wrestling: Westerly’s Holdredge reaches semifinals at state tournament



PROVIDENCE — Westerly High’s Brady Holdredge advanced to the semifinals of the RIIL state wrestling tournament with a pair of wins Friday night.

Holdredge won both of his matches in the 160 pound class by 8-2 decisions.

Holdredge will face Chariho’s Ben Dougherty for a spot in the title match on Saturday.

Ethan Kadar earned a win and loss at 145 pounds. He won by tech fall, 18-3, and lost 8-1.

Judea Balmonte earned two wins before losing in the quarterfinals. Balmonte won with a 9-6 decision and a pin in 45 seconds. He lost to top seed Reuben Hancock of Cumberland by pin.

The tournament resumes Saturday at 10 a.m. with the semifinals expected to start around noon.

Westerly was 20th in the team standings with 14.5 points. Ponaganset was in first with 88 points.

The top three finishers qualify for the New England tournament.
