Girls swimming: Westerly’s 200 medley team finishes 7th at state championships

PROVIDENCE — Westerly High’s 200-yard medley relay team finished seventh to highlight the Bulldogs’ performance at the RIIL swimming championships Saturday at Brown University.

Jenna Burke, Melanie Gomes, Jessica Burke and Lea Koppermann combined for a time of 1:57.80 in the event.

The four also teamed to take ninth in the 200 freestyle relay, in 1:48.14.

Westerly finished tied for 12th with 54 points. Barrington won the state title with 300; La Salle (284) was second. Twenty-seven teams scored at the meet.

Individually, three swimmers scored for the Bulldogs: Gomes was 11th in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.51); Koppermann was 14th in the 100 breast (1:12.98); and Jessica Burke was 14th in the 100 butterfly (1:04.73).
