PROVIDENCE — Westerly's Rhys Johnstone made the podium at the RIIL boys swimming championships Saturday, finishing seventh in 100 backstroke in a personal-best 55.29.
He was also 10th in the 50 freestyle in a career best of 23.01 at the meet, which was held at Brown University.
"Making the podium feels great," Johnstone said. "It's nice to be rewarded for all the hard work. I definitely wanted to trim down my time. I'd rather have a personal best than place high."
Bishop Hendricken won the meet with 384 points, 50 more than Barrington. Westerly finished tied for 11th with 71 points.
Johnstone also helped Westerly to two top-10 finishes in relays. He combined with Spencer Bernat, North Infante and Matt Robinson to place seventh in the 400 freestyle relay (3:35.48) and ninth in the 200 free relay (1:38.45).
Also scoring for Westerly were Madigan Hiltz in the 500 freestyle (13th, 5:34.18); Infante in the 200 individual medley (15th, 3:17.36); and the 200 medley relay team of Bernat, Hiltz, Infante and Jensen Lund (15th, 1:59.03).
