WESTERLY — Two varsity games and two junior varsity games will tip off the 34th annual WCCU Holiday Basketball Tournament at Westerly High Tuesday.

Varsity girls teams from Westerly and Stonington will meet at 6:15 p.m. followed by Chariho vs. South Kingstown.

Earlier in the day the junior varsity teams from each school will play the same opponents starting at 2:15 p.m.

Westerly has won three straight to improve to 3-2 after starting the season with a pair of losses to Division I schools South Kingstown and Coventry.

Stonington, which has won the WCCU title 18 times, comes into the tournament with a 2-1 record.

Chariho, which did win a game last season playing in Division I, is 4-1 after starting the season with four straight victories. The Chargers are now in Division II.

South Kingstown, which won the tournament in its inaugural season last year, is 3-1 with the only loss coming to North Kingstown in overtime. Last year’s tournament MVP, Brooke Peasley, is back as a senior point guard.

The girls varsity consolation games is Thursday at 6:15 p.m. followed by the title game at 8 p.m.

The boys portion of the tournament starts Wednesday with the same pairings as the girls.

Westerly comes into the tournament with a 3-2 record after starting the season with losses to Division I North Kingstown and Coventry.

David Tiedemann, Westerly’s 6-foot-8 forward who will play at Assumption next season, will not play in the tournament. He has not played in a game this season due to a knee injury. The Bulldogs are hopeful he can return in January.

Westerly senior guard Taber Gates needs one 3-pointer to become the all-time career leader. He is tied with Austin Cilley with 233 3-pointers.

Stonington is 2-1 with wins over Wheeler and Fitch.

Chariho is 2-2. The Chargers started the season with a pair of wins, but lost to defending Division II champion Cumberland and East Greenwich (4-1). Chariho beat South Kingstown in the title game last season.

The Rebels stand at 4-1 with their only loss coming against a good Classical team.

SK features 6-foot-7 forward Keegan Records. Records was a first-team All-State selection last season when he averraged 18.5 points, 15.5 rebounds and 4.5 blocks per game.

The boys championship game takes place Friday at 8 p.m.
