Misto receives Conn. coaching award

WESTERLY — Holly Misto has been named the girls coach of the year by the Connecticut Sports Writers’ Alliance.

Misto, a former Westerly High girls basketball coach, led New London to the Class LL championship last spring. The Whalers finished 26-2 and were ranked the No. 1 team in the state in the final GameTime CT/New Haven Register poll.

Misto is in her fourth season with the Whalers. New London lost to Capital Prep in the Class L title game in 2016.

Misto coached Westerly for nine years compiling a 173-58 record including a Division II title and a Division I runner-up finish.

Proceeds benefit the Bo Kolinsky Journalism Scholarship, named after a longtime Hartford Courant sportswriter who died unexpectedly in 2003.
