WESTERLY — Two Westerly High singles players and two doubles players earned first-team Division III-Central A first-team honors for the boys tennis team this season.
No. 1 Sam Kuzu and No. 2 Sebastian Bellone earned top singles honors.
Ryan Texeira and J.D. Dauphinais and Kyle Wicklund and Bereket Janat earned the honors in doubles.
Kuzu, a senior, put together an 8-6 record at the top spot.
“The team was pretty much led by the singles players. Sam had some terrific wins over solid players that he had lost to in the previous two seasons,” coach Terence McAndrew said.
Bellone, a senior, finished 9-2 at No. 2.
“Sebastian was pretty much a rock all year,” McAndrew said. “His ability to compete was unparalleled.”
Dauphinais, a freshman, and Texeria, a junior, finished 6-1 as the top doubles team.
“Ryan and J.D., both of them individually showed the most improvement over the course of the season,” McAndrew said. “By the end of the season, they were the No. 1 doubles team in the division.”
Wicklund, a senior, and Janat, a junior, combined for a 6-2 mark at second doubles.
“Kyle and Bereket used their athleticism to post a pretty impressive division record,” McAndrew said.
Freshman Blake Busch and senior John Luzzi earned second-team singles honors. Busch finished 9-2. Luzzi, who was sick for a part of the season, posted a 4-4 record.
Seniors Angelo Turano and Latham Woodman were second team in doubles with a 5-0 record.
Westerly finished 10-4 overall and 9-3 in the division. The Bulldogs beat Coventry in the quarterfinals of the D-III tournament before losing to eventual champion Tiverton in the semifinals.
