Girls soccer: Westerly settles for tie with Johnston

WESTERLY — Skye Byrne headed Emily Haik’s corner kick inside the far post with five minutes left in the game and the Westerly High girls soccer team salvaged a 2-2 tie with new Division II rival Johnston in the season-opening game for both teams Wednesday.

Sydney Federico scored in the first half for Westerly before the Panthers, the Division III champions last season, took a 2-1 lead in the second half. Bianca Robbins scored both goals for Johnston.

“This is definitely a team we should’ve won against,” Westerly coach Jay Hudson said. “I think we gave up being aggressive and challenging the ball in the second half. … And typical balls we play that go in the right direction for whatever reason would spin the other way.”

Goalie Macie Woycik made seven saves for Westerly, which finished with a 20-8 shots advantage.

The Bulldogs next play at Lincoln on Friday at 4:15 p.m.
