Boys soccer: Bears open with 1-0 win at Woodstock

WOODSTOCK, Conn. — Stonington High opened its boys soccer season with a 1-0 victory over Woodstock Academy in an ECC out-of-division game Friday.

With 5:10 elapsed in the first half, Tyler Fidrych headed a ball into the air to Graham Johnstone, who volleyed it home for the only goal of the game.

Peter Fernholz made nine saves in goal for the Bears, who were outshot by the Centaurs, 9-6. Both teams had five corner kicks each.

Stonington hosts Westerly on Saturday at 3 p.m. in a Piver Cup first-round game.
