NEW LONDON — Stonington High’s Will Cannella had an assist to help the Eastern Eagles co-op ice hockey team edge Tri-Town, 4-3, to capture the Nutmeg Conference title Thursday night at Connecticut College’s Dayton Arena.
Canella assisted on Kyle Jacobson’s first-period goal, the opening score of the game.
The Eagles, comprised of student-athletes from Stonington, Wheeler, Fitch, East Lyme, Ledyard, Hale-Ray, Waterford and Griswold high schools, improved to 15-3-3 for the season.
The Terrocats (9-5-1) never led in the contest.
The Eagles are seeded fifth for the CIAC Division III tournament and will host the No. 12 Redhawks (5-15) on Monday at 7 p.m. at Dayton. The Redhawks are a co-op with student-athletes from Norwich Free Academy, St. Bernard, Bacon Academy, Montville and Lyman Memorial.
