SOUTHBURY, Conn. — Stonington High placed fourth at the CIAC Class S gymnastics championships Saturday at Pomperaug High.
The Bears finished with a score of 128.85. Woodstock Academy won the title with 139.175, followed by Mercy (132.8) and Oxford (130.5).
The meet was a team competition. Eight squads participated.
“Overall, I’m glad we didn’t finish lower than fourth,” Stonington coach Leslie Gomes said. “I was just hoping a little more would come together. Not that I’m disappointed. Some good things came out of the meet, but I just see so much more in them.
“I don’t know what happens to us at these big meets.”
The top four for each team in each event scored points.
Stonington was sixth in the vault, fourth on bars, fourth on beam and sixth on floor. The Bears’ individual results by event follow:
Vault: Catherine Cassata 8.70, Lila Rich 8.50, Desiree Zaharie 8.475, Tessa Henningsen 8.35.
Bars: Ruth Green 8.35, Cassata 8.05, Katya Torruella 7.60, Jackie Santacroce 7.55.
Beam: Torruella 8.40, Henningsen 7.90, Rich 7.80, Zaharie 7.20.
Floor: Henningsen 8.125, Cassata 8.00, Rich 7.95, Tourruella 7.90.
Gomes said bright spots for a young Stonington team were Tourruella and Henningsen.
“Katya’s beam [performance] was wonderful. She had the sixth- or seventh-highest beam score in the whole meet. She did great today; Tessa did great today,” Gomes said. “We’re mostly freshmen. There’s three or four of them on each event, and this was a whole new experience for them. Hopefully they get their jitters out, but time will tell.”
The State Open individual championships are scheduled for Saturday at Pomperaug. Competition begins at 10 a.m.
