Stonington track: Bears take fourth in EE 1,600 SMR at nationals



GREENSBORO, N.C. — Stonington High’s 1,600 sprint medley relay team finished fourth in the Emerging Elite race at the New Balance Nationals Outdoor on Friday.

Rhys Hammond, Cam Whalen, Joey Hinckley and Chase Flynn combined for a time of 3:3.80. Hillhouse of New Haven won the event in 3:29.12.

In the 800 sprint medley relay, Shane Smith, Hinckley, Whalen and Hammond finished 10th in 1:34.99. The difference between second and 12th was less than a second.

Hillhouse won the event in 1:33.24.

Whalen finished 23rd in the Emerging Elite 110 hurdles with a time of 14.6 seconds. William Spencer of Highland Springs, Va. won the event in 14.06.

Events at the nationals are either Emerging Elite or Championship. The qualifying standards for the Emerging Elite events are not as stringent as the Championship events.
