College track: Chariho grad Marsella finishes 11th in 1,500 at NCAAs



EUGENE, Oregon — Former Chariho High standout Mike Marsella finished 11th in the 1,500 meter race at the NCAA Division I outdoor track championships Friday night at the University of Oregon.

His performance earned him second-team All-American honors.

Marsella, a graduate student at the University of Virginia, finished with a time of 3:52.39. The race was run in a steady rain. Oliver Hoare of Wisconsin won the race in 3:44.77.

This is the second All-American honor for Marsella. He was an All-American in 2015 with the distance medley relay team at UVa.

During his time at Chariho, Marsella was the New England cross country champion his senior year.

He was named the Gatorade state cross country runner of the year.

He was also the 3,200 New England champion.
