Wrestling: Chariho’s Wrzesien reaches quarterfinals at New Englands



PROVIDENCE — Chariho High’s Tommy Wrzesien won his second-round bout at 182 pounds and advanced to the quarterfinals of the New England wrestling tournament Friday at the Providence Career & Technical Academy.

Wrzesien, a two-time Rhode Island state champion, received a bye in the first round before pinning Danny O’Connell of Methuen (Mass.) in 3:29 in the second round.

Wrzesien is 45-0 with 39 pins this season. He will face Dylan Tremblay of Timberlane (Plaistow, N.H.) in the quarterfinals.

At 160, Ben Dougherty went 1-1 Friday. He opened with a bye, lost 6-5 to Ahmad Sharif (Putnam, Conn.) and defeated Andrew Piedrahita (Westford, Mass), 5-4.

At 126, Kyle Merritt was also 1-1. He lost to Justin Mastroianni (New Canaan, Conn.), 8-3, received a bye, and decisioned Phil Dure (Foxborough, Mass.), 7-0.

Wrestling continues today at PCTA, starting at 9 a.m.
