Wrestling: Seven Chargers reach semifinals; Chariho third after first day



PROVIDENCE — Seven Chariho High wrestlers advanced to the semifinals of the RIIL state wrestling tournament Friday night at the Providence Career & Technical Academy.

Kyle Merritt, Dominic Bonanno, James Dougherty, Ben Dougherty, Cam Anderson, Tommy Wrzesien and Max Duscha all reached the semifinals.

Merritt, who won the state title last year at 113 pounds as a freshman, prevailed in both his bouts with pins. Bonanno won with a pin and a 6-2 decision at 145 pounds.

James Dougherty won by tech fall, 16-1, and 9-5, at 145 pounds. His older brother, Ben Dougherty, won with a pin and an 8-6 decision at 160. He will wrestle Westerly’s Brady Holdredge on Saturday in the semfinals.

Anderson (170) won by pin and major decision, 13-2.

Wrzesien, the defending state champion at 182, moved to 42-0 with a pair of pins.

Duscha (195) prevail with two decisions, 9-4 and 4-3.

Chariho is third in the team standings with 73.5 points. Ponaganset leads with 88 and Cumberland is second with 79.

The first day of the tournament was delayed a bit when the building had to be empted after a fire alarm sounded.

The tournament resumes Saturday at 10 a.m. The semifinals are expected to begin around noon.
