STONINGTON — Fitch’s Valentine Silva scored off a corner kick with about 16 minutes left in the game and the Falcons defeated Chariho High, 2-1, in the girls portion of the Josh Piver Cup soccer tournament Saturday at Stonington High.
The ball appeared to deflect off a Chariho defender before it went in the goal.
Chariho (1-1-1) had a lot of possession in the second half and generated a number of quality opportunities. Fitch used its speed for a number of counterattacks.
Jillian Pepler scored Chariho’s only goal about 15 minutes into the second half. Claire Fox started the scoring sequence carrying the ball down the left sideline, eluding two defenders along the way. She crossed the ball and Pepler was eventually able to finish.
“We were able to put in a lot of swing players and a lot of freshmen on the field,” Chariho coach Brittney Godbout said. “That was our goal for today. It was nice to see them apply things from pratice on the field.”
Madison Lynch scored Fitch’s other goal.
