SMITHFIELD — Smithfield scored a goal in each half and shut out Chariho High, 2-0, in a Division II field hockey game Wednesday, the season opener for both teams.
Then Sentinels, a Division I program last year, outshot the Chargers, 11-6, and had eight penalty corners to Chariho’s five.
The Chargers outran Smithfield, coach Mariah Northrop said in an email, “but just couldn’t get the ball in the cage.”
Sydney Anderson made nine saves in goal for Chariho, which next hosts South Kingstown on Thursday at 4 p.m.
