WOOD RIVER JCT. — Spencer Shiels got Chariho High on the board with a goal eight minutes into the game, Hannah Orciari added a goal in the second half and the Chargers blanked East Providence, 2-0, in a Division II girls soccer matchup Wednesday.

The game was the season opener for both teams.

“We had a lot of opportunities,” Chariho coach Brittney Godbout said, adding that her team hit the post six times. “The midfielders and attacking forwards were working very nicely together. Their combination plays were spot on. It’s just the finishing we need to work on.”

Tia Sardelli and Claire Fox each had assists for the Chargers, who outshot EP, 18-5, and had seven corner kicks to two for the Townies. Chariho goalie Caitlin O’Leary had five saves.

East Providence won the D-III title in 2016 and reached the championship game last season before moving up to D-II for 2018.

Chariho next visits Exeter-West Greenwich on Friday for a 4 p.m. game.
