Westerly woman charged with forgery and theft after police said she cashed a stolen check

WESTERLY — A 28-year-old local woman was arrested Thursday on forgery and theft charges after the police said she cashed one stolen check and tried to cash another. According to police, the woman, Ariana D. Bruno, of 51 Pleasant St., took checks from a relative and obtained $250 from the account at the Westerly Community Credit Union.

She was charged with two counts of forgery and/or counterfeiting and one count of obtaining money under false pretenses. After the check was cashed on Tuesday, a red flag was placed on the account. When Bruno returned the next day, the transaction was denied. Police obtained a warrant and Bruno was taken in custody.
