WESTERLY — A local man is facing charges in a hit-and-run collision last week on Granite Street after the police said he fled the scene.
The man, Shane Andrew Mulligan, 22, of 17 Apache Drive, Apt. F, Westerly, was charged with driving under the influence with a blood alcohol content greater than .15 and failure to stop at a crash resulting in damage to property. He was also cited with laned roadway violations.
Westerly Police Capt. Shawn Lacey said Mulligan was traveling on Route 1 in the area of Granite and Grove streets on Nov. 1 when his Lincoln sedan rear-ended another car. A witness gave the police a description and plate number for the car.
There was minor damage to both vehicles but no injuries, the police said.
An officer spotted Mulligan in the car a few minutes later in the area of Walmart along Post Road and conducted a traffic stop. Police said Mulligan admitted being in the collision and stopped for a moment, but became nervous and left.
Lacey said the officer conducted a field sobriety test, and also administered a portable breathalyzer test that registered blood alcohol content at .167. At the police station, Mulligan submitted to further testing, which came in at .159 and .154.
He was arraigned Friday in Fourth Division District Court and was released pending a status conference on Nov. 14.
