WESTERLY — A local man is facing DUI charges after police said he crashed into the curbing of a traffic island near the intersection of Shore and Watch Hill roads on Saturday. The man, Jason A. Roberts, 38, of 45 Summer St., was charged Saturday with driving under the influence with a blood alcohol content greater than .15.
Westerly Police Lt. Robert Warner said Roberts was arrested at about 6 p.m. along Watch Hill Road after a witness reported that a man was “nearly falling over” after he got out of his car to look at the damage.
Warner said Roberts “was leaning on the hood of his car when police arrived and was unable to stand up on his own. He told police he was driving and realized he had a flat tire and said he did ‘hit something,’ but was unsure where.” He was given a field sobriety test, which he failed, the police said.
Warner said an officer found parts of the tire that had torn off near the traffic island at the western end of Shore Road. The police said it was later determined that he crashed through the island, severely damaging the front passenger side tire, before pulling onto Watch Hill Road.
At the station, police said, Roberts consented to a breathalyzer test, which returned blood alcohol readings of .254 and .252 in separate phases. He is due in Fourth Division District Court later this month.
