The Rhode Island State Police have filed charges against a South Kingstown woman, saying she was driving under the influence in the January crash in East Greenwich that killed two passengers and injured a third.
The woman, Precious G. Montey, 25, was charged Thursday with two counts of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol resulting in death. She was held overnight and arraigned Friday in Third Division District Court.
The fatal crash occurred Jan. 27 on Route 4 at the northbound I-95 interchange. Montey, driving a 2004 Jeep Liberty, veered across two lanes on a curve and hit a tree in the high-speed median on the western side of the roadway, the police said.. Passengers Emma Brown, 21, of Wakefield, and Lorenzo Smith, 32, of South Kingstown, were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Montey and a third passenger, Chanon A. Johnson, 32, of Exeter, were taken to Rhode Island Hospital, where they were treated and released.
State police with the Wickford Barracks said an investigation determined that Montey’s blood alcohol content at the time of the crash was approximately .210, more than 2.5 times the legal limit. The police obtained a warrant and she turned herself in on Thursday evening, officials said.
