STONINGTON — A Norwich woman has been charged with impairing the morals of a minor after the police said she suffered an apparent overdose while in the presence of her 1-year-old child.

The woman, Heather J. Schmitt, 36, was arrested Tuesday morning and arraigned in New London Superior Court, where she was released on bond. The police said she had been a passenger in a car that was stopped just before 6 a.m. and told officers she was wanted on a warrant and was coming to turn herself in.

The charge was based on an emergency on Aug. 9. The police said that officers and medics were dispatched to a home along Palmer Neck Road on that day and treated Schmitt for a suspected drug overdose. Investigators said she had “ingested or was under the influence of illegal drugs” while in the presence of her toddler child. The drugs were not identified.

There was no evidence to suggest that the child was exposed or had access to the drugs, police said. The child was released into the custody of a family member later that day, the police said.
