New London man charged after being found at gas station with stolen minivan

STONINGTON — A New London man was arrested after police found him at a local gas station with a minivan that had been reported stolen from his hometown. The man, Robert W. Rice, 67, was charged just after midnight Thursday with third-degree larceny of a motor vehicle and failure to submit to fingerprinting.

Stonington patrol officers had been notified at the beginning of their shift to be on the lookout for the minivan, which had been seen in the area. An officer saw Rice with the van near the Evans Mobil station at the intersection of West Broad and Liberty streets just after midnight, police said, and officers confirmed through New London police that it was the van reported as stolen. Police said Rice refused to cooperate during booking and would not allow police to take his photograph or fingerprint him for records, leading to the additional charge.
