DUI, speeding arrests down over last year’s holiday period



MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — Connecticut State Police made fewer stops for motor vehicle violations over the New Year’s holiday this year than they did last year.

Rhode Island State Police had not released holiday enforcement statistics as of 5 p.m. Tuesday.

The agency added patrols from 12:01 a.m. on Friday, through 11:59 p.m. Monday. Enforcement covered the interstate highways as well as state and local roadways.

Following are arrests in each category for this year’s holiday period as of midnight Monday followed in parenthesis by arrests in the same category during last year’s holiday period.

Speeding — 611 (705)

Seatbelt violations — 20 (15)

All moving violations — 1,410 (1,800), includes unsafe lane change, following too closely, cell phone usage, texting, failure to signal, etc.

DUI arrests — 28 (34)                

Accidents investigated — 494 (276); with injury — 54 (34); fatality — 2 (2 accidents, 3 fatalities)

Motorist assists — 480 (270)

Total calls for service: 6,885 (6,987)
