Clerks at 2 Stonington businesses cited for sale of tobacco to minors

STONINGTON — Store clerks at Legend Smoke Shop on West Broad Street, and at A to Z Convenience, also known as Bestway, on Liberty Street, have been cited for selling tobacco products to a minor, the police reported.

Stonington police, in partnership with the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, conducted an unannounced compliance check at 12 locations on Tuesday, leading to the citations, which carry a $200 fine. The police said the businesses would be referred to the state Department of Revenue for a license review.

Police said an underage youth visited the stores in connection with state’s Tobacco and Prevention Program, and was supervised by officers and the health and addiction services staff.
