WESTERLY —“Silver & Snow,” the exhibit opening Wednesday at the Artists’ Cooperative Gallery of Westerly on Canal Street — traditionally the most eclectic show of the year — will host a special Wednesday opening to coincide with the annual Holiday Stroll and Luminaria, sponsored by the Downtown Westerly-Pawcatuck Merchants Association.
The show will feature handmade works of art and craft ranging from ornaments to jewelry, silk scarves, journals, cards, woodenware, pottery, sculpture, photography and paintings, said artist member Lois Lawrence, noting that “special emphasis will be placed on small affordable works suitable for gift-giving and for decking the halls for the holidays and beyond.”
The gallery will welcome visitors Wednesday “with complimentary cookies and hot cider and many of the artists will be on hand to meet with shoppers and share their artistic secrets,” Lawrence said.
On Dec. 3, as part of the gallery’s mission to support the arts in the region, artist member Karen Dodez will present a hands-on workshop about creating driftwood wall sculptures. A limited supply of driftwood will be provided on a first-come-first-served basis, but attendees are encouraged to bring their own. Dodez will provide other materials such as sea glass and shells, Lawrence said. In lieu of a fee for attendance, participants are asked to bring a donation of art supplies for distribution by the Jonnycake Center. For questions about the workshop or to sign up, contact the artist at firstname.lastname@example.org. Also, check the “events” section of the gallery website, westerlyarts.com to see examples of Dodez’s driftwood sculptures.
Throughout the holiday season, Lawrence added, the gallery will be collecting donations of art supplies which will then be donated to the Jonnycake Center, a nonprofit organization that provides food, clothing, educational and financial assistance to those in need in the Westerly-Chariho area. Donations may be dropped off at any time during gallery hours.
“Silver and Snow” officially runs from Wednesday, Nov. 29, to Jan. 3, 2018.
The Artist’s Cooperative Gallery of Westerly is a nonprofit organization run by artist members. Prices for artwork are set by the artists. Regular artist members of the gallery pay no gallery commissions. Original art is tax-free in the state of Rhode Island.
